Versacount II with EPD

Versacount II with EPD

What is a Versacount

The Versacount2 is a semi-automated system for counting parts in reels of carrier tape.

What is EPD

This system has an option to use an EPD (Empty Pocket Detection) sensor, which is used to check if any parts are missing from any of the pockets within the reel of carrier tape.  This is a very useful feature to use when running stock takes, inventory control or kitting, specifically when the parts are of high value.

How does EPD Work

The EPD is a through hole sensor with both an emitter and receiver located above and below the carrier tape. Because it relies on detecting a beam of light passing through the carrier tape pockets to detect an empty pocket, it will function properly only when using black carrier tapes that have center holes or clear plastic tape.

It should be noted too, that the EPD is designed to function properly only when the parts counted meet a size minimum. For black carrier tape, the parts should be at least 0.05" in width (0805 package). For clear carrier tape, the parts should be at least 0.063" in width (1206 package).

Setting up EPD for either black or clear carrier tapes is simple.

EPD with Black Carrier Tape

Simply align an empty pocket directly under the EPD sensor before running the job.  The system will then check the EPD signal, which is expected top be blocked all the time that black tape or a component is in a pocket.  If no part is in a pocket, the EPD sensor will see the light passing through the pocket hole and trigger an EPD count.

EPD with Clear Carrier Tape

Simply align a pocket, with a part in it, under the EPD sensor before running the job.
The system will check the EPD signal each time the tape has been advanced, by the pitch amount set for the job.  If there is no part in the pocket, then the EPD sensor will see the light passing through either the pocket hole of through the clear tape and trigger an EPD count.

Please Note: Parts which are placed on paper carrier can not be used with the EPD.
Typically, these tend to be very small sized, low value parts so there tends to me no commercial or production value in using EPD on such small parts.  The Versacount 2 can still be used to count parts on paper carriers providing they meet the minimum pitch/part requirements.
